1. VULNERABILITY DOESN’T EQUATE TO WEAKNESS

Most of the time, when we talk about being vulnerable, the first thing that pops into our minds is weakness. But in fact, it is actually an essential asset for innovation. And in Dare to Lead, we learned that acts of courage come from putting yourself in a vulnerable position first. 

In other words, you have to understand that the feeling of vulnerability is a good thing. And as long as you manage to overcome the feeling of uncertainty that comes with it, you’re well on your way to being a great leader. 


2. KNOW YOUR CORE VALUES

Being a leader is tough. There will always be times where you’re going to experience hardships. But just as they always say, you should never give up. And in Dare to Lead, we learned that core values anchor and guide one’s daring leadership.

So take the time to ask yourself, what drives you the most in being a leader? According to the author, two values should be enough as it is more actionable. And once you’ve figured what those values are, you can use those to guide you and keep you inspired when the going gets tough.


3. BEING TRUSTWORTHY IS A CRUCIAL ATTRIBUTE OF A DARING LEADER

In Dare to Lead, we learned that trust is an essential aspect of our working relationships. 

But how do you gain one’s trust? According to the author, her team of researchers named seven individual behaviors that encourage trust, which we can easily remember through the acronym BRAVING. The B stands for boundaries, R for reliability, A for accountability, V for vault or the ability to keep secrets, I for integrity, N for non-judgment, and G for generosity. 

If you apply these behaviors to yourself, then you can expect a healthy and productive work environment for you and your team.


4. RESILIENCY IS PART OF EVERY BRAVE LEADER’S DNA

In Dare to Lead, we found that learning how to fail helps us to be brave. And as we learn how to fail, we also learn how to be resilient, which in time makes us courageous. Resilience isn’t about being weak or never giving up. It’s about choosing to be strong in the face of adversity and disappointment, even when it hurts.    

So to be a brave leader, you should be willing to take bigger risks and fail harder than anyone else and trust in the process that what you’re doing will eventually pay off.


5. PERFECTION ISN’T ALWAYS A GOOD THING

In Dare to Lead, we learned that perfectionism holds us back from self-improvement and true courage. When you’re leading a team, it is vital to aim for progress and not perfection. Because striving for perfection, even up to the point where you stress out on the little things, can only give you burnout and reduce your productivity, according to mindtools.com.  

So make sure that you’re making a conscious, strategic and gradual shift towards leading in accordance with your values and desires.
